The 400-year History and Charm of the
Sanada Clan in Matsushiro, Nagano

The Matsushiro Domain in Matsushiro, Nagano, which was centered around Matsushiro Castle, developed into a castle town of 100,000 goku (a unit of assessed crop yields of the land) during the Edo Period. The culture and traditions that were established during the Edo Period still remain to this day, giving us a clearer insight into the lives of those who lived during that time. Many remnants of the old castle town still stand, including the Sanada Clan palace, the Literary and Military Arts School, Buddhist temples and shrines linked to the Sanada Clan, and a preserved samurai residence—all offering visitors a glimpse into the town’s rich historical charm.

Including the first lord, Sanada Nobuyuki, who moved from Ueda to Matsushiro in 1622, there have been 10 generations of Sanada leaders that have ruled over this land for roughly 250 years. Many historical remains and cultural properties of the Sanada Clan still remain in Matsushiro. By touring these historical heritage sites, you will gain an insight into what life was like in the castle town during the Edo Period.
